From the SmartOnline manual

The owner’s manual for the SmartOnline SU750 to SU3000 rack and tower units sets the battery rules:

  • Batteries are rated for 3 to 5 years, and their life halves for every 10 °C above 25 °C [2].
  • Replace them at least every 4 years [3], with the same type and number of batteries or packs [8].
  • An automatic battery test runs once a month: a 10-second discharge under load [9]. It shows that the battery can carry the load briefly, not how long it will last.
  • The low battery alarm sounds when the remaining runtime drops below 3 minutes [10].
  • Runtime also drops in a cold room, below 10 °C [11].
  • A unit kept in storage needs its battery recharged every 6 months [12].

Battery packs behind the UPS

A SmartOnline rack UPS can carry up to 4 external battery packs [4]. Packs bought at different times age at different rates. A weak pack drags the whole bank down, and the UPS front panel only shows the bank as a whole. At each visit we read every block in every pack against the last visit [13]. We also check that the pack count set in the UPS matches the packs installed, so the runtime estimate is real. Batteries are swapped with the load running [5].

Retired three-phase systems

The SU modular systems are retired and Tripp Lite named no successor for them [7]. For the SVX90KL, Eaton points to its 93PM in Canada [6]. Owners of either need a plan: keep the frame running with batteries and fans changed on schedule, or move to a current three-phase model, sized from the measured load.
