Power infrastructure maintenance

Critical power maintenance starts with current records

A map entry says nothing about the condition, capacity, or service history of the electrical systems behind a facility. Qualified site personnel must confirm the equipment and its current operating state.

Trace the complete power path

Start at the utility entrance and follow switchgear, transfer equipment, generators, fuel systems, UPS modules, maintenance bypasses, batteries, distribution, grounding, monitoring, and electrical-room cooling. A service report for one component does not prove that the system is ready.

Confirm the current operating arrangement, available redundancy, known impairments, approved switching boundaries, and the effect of planned work on protected loads.

Know what changed since the last visit

Useful records include an asset register, current single-line drawings, maintenance and test reports, alarm history, battery condition results, open deficiencies, parts status, and end-of-support dates. Record who did the work, when it happened, what was measured, and what remains open.

Battery reviews should identify chemistry, string and cabinet configuration, age, environment, inspection findings, test method, replacement criteria, and disposal requirements. Cabinet or rack condition, ventilation, protection, clearances, and anchoring may need separate review.

Plan the work around the protected load

Planned work needs an approved site procedure with prerequisites, roles, communications, hold points, rollback conditions, and emergency response. Before switching or testing, confirm the live hazards and the exact equipment state.

The guidance is not a maintenance procedure, switching order, engineering design, or substitute for the equipment manufacturer and the authority having jurisdiction.

Specialists and replacement equipment

For Canadian data-centre service planning, GDF Technologies outlines its Canadian data-centre UPS service and maintenance work, including preventive maintenance and battery service.

For replacement work, UPSPLUSBATTERY lists UPS batteries, battery cabinets, racks, and related hardware.

These commercial links do not support or rank any facility record. They are included only because the services and equipment are relevant to the maintenance work described here.
