Before you buy: the sizing review
Nameplate ratings are maximums, so a UPS sized from them alone rarely matches the real load. We check:
- The real load: measured, or taken from the equipment’s power supply ratings, with power factor
- Growth: what will be added over the UPS’s life
- Runtime: how long the load must run on battery, and whether a generator takes over
- Topology: online double conversion for critical loads 5; line-interactive only where the load and the power quality allow it
- Redundancy: N, N+1 or 2N, depending on how much downtime the site can accept
- The room: floor loading, clearances, cooling and ventilation for the batteries
- Input: single-phase or three-phase supply, breaker sizes, generator compatibility
Installation and start-up
- Site survey: access route, floor loading, clearances, power and cooling.
- Placement: delivery coordination, positioning, battery cabinet assembly.
- Electrical connection by a licensed electrical contractor, to the manufacturer’s installation manual and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code 1.
- Start-up to the manufacturer’s procedure: pre-power checks, settings, firmware, battery installation and charge 3.
- Commissioning tests: load test, transfer to and from bypass, battery discharge, alarm and shutdown signalling to your monitoring 4.
- Handover: test records, settings, the maintenance schedule and your team walked through the front panel and bypass procedure.
Replacing an existing UPS
When the new UPS replaces an old one, the swap is planned so the load is never unprotected for longer than it must be: a temporary UPS or a maintenance bypass carries the load while the old unit is removed and the new one is commissioned. The old unit and its batteries are removed and recycled.
Common questions
How do you install a commercial UPS?
Survey the site, size the UPS to the measured load and runtime, place it with the right clearances and cooling, have a licensed electrical contractor connect it 1, start it up to the manufacturer's procedure, then test it under load before handing it over.
Do I need an electrician to install a UPS in Ontario?
Hard-wired UPS systems are connected by a licensed electrical contractor in Ontario 1, and almost all electrical work is reported to ESA through a notification of work 2.
What is UPS commissioning?
Proving the installed UPS works as designed before it carries the critical load: start-up to the manufacturer's procedure, load and battery tests, bypass transfers, and alarm and shutdown signalling, all recorded in a handover file.
Does the manufacturer have to start up a new UPS?
Some manufacturers make start-up by their own or authorized technicians a warranty condition 3. Check the warranty for your model; we tell you before quoting.
What size UPS do I need?
Size from the measured load in kW and kVA plus planned growth, then choose battery runtime for how long the load must run without utility power. Send your load list through the request form for a sizing review.
